Hey, friends. I started this email on July 1st and by started I mean I wrote the subject line ‘making the best of bad situations’ then got so busy that only now on August 7th have I sat down to finish it. And by ‘sat down to finish it’ I mean I’m writing this tiny opener in a cafe as I await my order and will no doubt finish it later (he said correctly as he finished this sentence on August 11th). When I first envisaged this email it was because my Macbook had broken and I was without it for a few weeks. Instead of just postponing writing I started a brand new novel I'd been toying with for sometime but wrote it in a notebook. It was an interesting creative challenge. Now that the MacBook is up and running again, I'll finish it on the computer but the point is—every setback, every challenge is an opportunity to do something else. I didn't have my computer so was forced to write in a different way. It also allowed me an extended period of time to study Japanese kanji (becoming fluent in Japanese is another of my long-term aims). So anytime you have a setback or run into a challenge ask why it's good or what good can come of it. It doesn't even have to mean it's good overall (sometimes it isn't) but if you can find joy, success, and new challenges amongst the bad times then you can find joy, success, and new challenges in all conditions.
