Just Do Something | Joshua Millican on Teleportasm | Early Bird Access to our Sandy King Carpenter Podcast

Hey, friends.

Right now whenever I sit down at the computer I have so many things I could be doing that are all important to me. Here are just a few:

  • Work on a secret project that will take around a year to complete
  • Work on one of multiple existing books in various stages of disarray
  • Work on a pitch for one of my completed 'ready to publish' books
  • Study Japanese
  • Answer emails (okay this one isn't so important to me, hence why I'm terrible at it)
  • Write down the bare-bones of a new story idea because damn it my brain is always bringing me something and I can't keep it in there forever
  • Research potential story ideas because for some reason even though I don't have enough time to complete every idea I have, I love exploring new ideas
  • Edit a podcast
  • Edit a video version of the podcast
  • Do something else podcast-related

Been in a similar situation? In the end it can become so overwhelming that there's a temptation to fall victim to decision paralysis, freeze up, and not do anything or you may find yourself bouncing from one task to another not really committing or getting deep into anything.

In the end, my best advice is to just do something. If you're not sure which is the most important thing to do right now, just choose something and work on that for a substantial chunk of time (say at least an hour).

If you do know your most important task then work on that and if there's time after then work on the second most important. You might want to dedicate different days to different tasks, perhaps Monday is primarily for writing and Tuesday for podcasting (switch up what's important for you with these examples).

Another way to manage what you're doing is to have automations which I may get into in a future email. For example, if I'm walking then I study Japanese on an app on my phone, if I'm cooking then I'm listening to or watching something relevant to an upcoming This Is Horror Podcast episode, if I'm watching pro wrestling then I'm working out.

I hope there's something in this that may be helpful for you and your work and life.

Hey, friends. I started this email on July 1st and by started I mean I wrote the subject line ‘making the best of bad situations’ then got so busy that only now on August 7th have I sat down to finish it. And by ‘sat down to finish it’ I mean I’m writing this tiny opener in a cafe as I await my order and will no doubt finish it later (he said correctly as he finished this sentence on August 11th). When I first envisaged this email it was because my Macbook had broken and I was without it for...
