Just Keep Going | Chris Panatier on This Is Horror Podcast | Reading Incidents Around The House by Josh Malerman

Hey, friends.

It’s been a couple of weeks since the last instalment of the This Is Horror newsletter. Today’s message is a simple one: just keep going.

You can apply this to your writing, to other creative projects, to your fitness, or indeed to any other aspect of life, including life itself.

One step at a time. One word at a time. One breath at a time. Keep on going.

See, any progress is better than no progress. When it comes to writing, maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed and overworked. Maybe you’re under-slept and underconfident. But remember this, one sentence is progress. Ten minutes of writing is much better than no minutes of writing. Don’t make the mistake of telling yourself that what you can do today is not good enough. Don’t let that bastard, self-doubt win.

You are going somewhere. You are making progress.

And it starts with one word, then one sentence, one paragraph, one page.

Remember, whilst people often overestimate what they can do in the short term they underestimate what they can do in the long term.

Just keep going.

What I'm Watching

I finished Bodkin and must point out my error in the previous newsletter (which Dan Howarth delightedly pointed out to me), I stupidly said it was based in a Welsh town. It is not. It is based in Ireland. I knew this. I know the difference between Wales and Ireland, but apparently it is not what I wrote.

I've recently finished Eric which was an interesting one. I hadn't seen Benedict Cumberbatch put on a performance like that but I'd love to see more from him in this vein. I didn't care for the ending but the journey was good.

Now I'm watching, Maid, made by the people responsible for the US version of Shameless. Much bleaker than Shameless and no laughs to be found here but very effectively done. Be warned, there's a lot of domestic violence in this one.

What I'm Reading

I finished Incidents Around The House by Josh Malerman just in time for our This Is Horror Podcast conversation. This is what I had to say about it on X:

This is the scariest book I’ve read this year. It might be the scariest book I’ve read in the last ten years. The last books to affect me like this were The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum (1989) and The End of Alice by A.M. Homes (1996).
Josh’s sense of pacing is INCREDIBLE. The thing about INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE is it creeps up on you. You don’t think it will affect you until it’s already too late. Until you’ve let it into your head, into your home, into your heart.
INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE will mess you up in every way imaginable and you won’t see it coming.

Hey, friends. I started this email on July 1st and by started I mean I wrote the subject line ‘making the best of bad situations’ then got so busy that only now on August 7th have I sat down to finish it. And by ‘sat down to finish it’ I mean I’m writing this tiny opener in a cafe as I await my order and will no doubt finish it later (he said correctly as he finished this sentence on August 11th). When I first envisaged this email it was because my Macbook had broken and I was without it for...

Hey, friends. If you’re struggling to get something done that you know would be beneficial for you but for whatever reason it’s not happening, one practice that might help is coupling these good practices with things you love. This will help with the resistance and will help you to develop the habit and stick with it in the early stages. Here are some examples. I mentioned studying Japanese kanji before. It is a daily practice that is incredibly monotonous. Looking at flashcards for kanji...

Hey, friends. I mentioned cutting back on coffee recently and I’ve been carrying out a number of experiments recently to see what the best quantity, frequency, and timings are for energy levels, alertness, feeling good, getting good sleep, and minimising side effects. If you want to know all about this experiment (like fellow writer and friend, John Crinan) then read on, if not you might want to skip to one of the other sections. Let’s start with the headlines. This is what I’m doing going...
